Proteins are the functional entities in all living systems. It has long been known that the functional three-dimensional structure of a protein is coded for by its primary one-dimensional amino-acid sequence, but the mechanism by which this folding happens is still not completely understood. The folding process is an intriguing example of biological wizardry, in which a polypeptide chain self- assembles into the unique native structure that holds the key to its function. Although there has been considerable recent progress, several fundamental and inter-linked questions remain to be figured out about this self-packing puzzle. Do proteins take shape gradually, in fits and starts, or all at once? Are there flip-flops? What comes first, an outline of the shape or the details? Is there only one folding sequence for each protein?
The international meeting on Protein Folding and Dynamics, to be held at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, from October 15 to 17, 2012, will discuss these topical issues in protein folding. The meeting brings together internationally recognized biologists, chemists and physicists whose continuing theoretical, computational and experimental contributions have advanced the field to a great extent.

Technical Program
At the meeting the lectures will cover a number of topics. The topics range from fundamental aspects of folding to their role in function. Topics that will be covered include:
Basic physics of folding
Folding of multi-domain proteins
Single molecule folding
Advanced Fluorescence and NMR methods
Linkage between folding and function
Common themes in folding families

The Registration fee for the meeting is:
USD 150 for participants applying from institutions outside India
INR 2500/- for participants applying from institutions within India
INR 5000/- for scientists applying from companies within India
Eligibility:
Applications are invited from graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and junior faculty interested in the topic of the symposium.
How to Apply:
All participants must submit a CV and a poster abstract to proteinfolding2012 at ncbs dot res dot in. If you do not plan to present a poster then write a short paragraph explaining your interest in the symposium. Include any specific overlap with your current/future research to help in the selection process. Selected participants will be notified by email and will be required to submit a registration fee by bankers draft.
Housing and Local Transport:
Participants will have to arrange their own accommodation. An off-campus housing list with relevant contact details will be put up on this site to help with booking accommodation in place of their choice. .
Aspecial transport service will be arranged between the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (closer to the centre of the city) and NCBS during the period of the symposium.
Timings will be posted closer to the date.

Poster presentation:
Selected applicants will be required to present a poster on a current research project. Poster specifications will be sent by email at a later date.
Travel:
Participants will be responsible for their own travel to Bangalore.

Visa:
All foreign nationals traveling to India are required to possess a valid passport of their country and a valid Indian Visa issued by the Indian Embassy or Indian Consular office in their country. Please apply for a “conference visa”. Selected applicants will be supplied with an invitation letter and relevant approvals which must be submitted with the Visa Application form. Visa authorization times are variable so it is best to apply at least 45 days in advance of your travel date. Air tickets must be booked only after the visa is issued.
Sightseeing:
A sightseeing trip of one night and two days can be organized to close by historical places like Belur, Hale bid, Shravanbelagola, and Mysore after the meeting on October 18th and 19th, departing October 18th early morning and arriving Bangalore on October 19th evening by about 8.00pm. Tour cost would be Rs. 9350/-per person on single occupancy and Rs. 6200/-per person on twin sharing.
