Course Overview:

Students will learn the elements of good science writing and the craft of conducting good interviews. The workshop will focus on news and features, which will lay the basis for a career in communicating science to the lay person. The workshop will demand active and committed participation from students. They will have to interview scientists, read and analyse academic papers, and write news and feature stories during the workshop.

The workshop will run from 9.30 AM to 5.00 PM each day, except Sat and Sun. The course will be intense, and will require fulltime participation from morning to evening. Students will analyse many published news and feature stories, to understand print journalism as it is practiced by highly-regarded magazines like New Scientist. Lectures will be combined with hands-on writing. Discussions will be encouraged. Students will get ample feedback on pieces they write in class.

Students should bring their own laptop to the workshop. In case this is not possible, a few computers are available for use in the teaching lab.
