Form begets function in life, and proteins are the functional entities in all living systems. The mechanism by which the functional three-dimensional structure of a protein is coded for by its primary one-dimensional amino-acid sequence, is still not completely understood. Protein Folding is an intriguing example of biological wizardry, in which a polypeptide chain self- assembles into the unique native structure that holds the key to its function. There has been considerable recent progress, but several fundamental and inter-linked questions remain to be answered about this self-packing puzzle. Do proteins take shape gradually, in fits and starts, or all at once? Are there flip-flops? What comes first, an outline of the shape or the details? Is there only one folding sequence for each protein?
The International Symposium on Protein Folding and Dynamics, to be held at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, from November 5 to 7, 2014, will discuss these topical issues in protein folding. The meeting brings together internationally recognized biologists, chemists and physicists whose continuing theoretical, computational and experimental contributions have advanced the field to a great extent.
